Small flying insects appear in the apartment suddenly and in hordes. They seem to appear out of nowhere, but in fact their appearance is always dictated by specific biological factors and the microclimate of the house.
The main causes of insects
The main factor attracting midges is fermentation process. The most frequent breeders in apartments are drosophila (fruit flies). They are attracted to the odor of rotting fruits, vegetables, and spilled sweet liquids such as juice, wine, or beer. Even a tiny piece of apple rolled under a cupboard becomes an ideal incubator for hundreds of larvae.
Another common species sciarids (mushroom mosquitoes). They are not interested in the food on the table, as their goal is to moist soil indoor plants. Excessive watering creates a favorable environment for their reproduction right in flower pots.
Pathways into the home
Gnats have a phenomenal sense of smell and can smell decay from a great distance. They enter homes in several ways:
-
Through open windows and vents.
-
Together with purchased fruits and vegetables, which may already have insect eggs.
-
With the soil for transplanting plants, if it has not been previously disinfected.
-
From sewage drains, where the walls of the pipes accumulate organic plaque.
Favorable breeding environment
In addition to food, gnats need high humidity. A forgotten wet rag near the sink, a leaky faucet or condensation on windows greatly accelerates their development cycle. In conditions of warmth and abundant food, the population increases exponentially in just a few days.
Dirty dishes left in the sink and not taking out the trash can in a timely manner are major sources of problems. Particular attention should be paid to potato and onion storage areas, as one spoiled bulb can cause a large-scale infestation.
Keeping surfaces clean and controlling the condition of food can completely eliminate the conditions necessary for these insects.
