Many people are accustomed to putting vegetables in one box or basket, considering this a convenient and logical solution. However joint storage onions and potatoes is a gross mistake that leads to rapid spoilage of food and loss of taste.
The main reason lies in the chemistry of the maturation processes. Onions actively release ethylene – a gas that acts as a natural growth stimulant. For potatoes, such a neighborhood becomes a signal to awaken. Under the influence of gas, the tubers begin germinate much ahead of schedule, they become soft and flabby, losing their nutritional value.
There is also the opposite problem, due to which the bow itself suffers. Potatoes contain a lot of water and during storage they evaporate moisture, creating high humidity. Bulbs require a dry environment and good ventilation for preservation. Excess moisture causes the onions to become wet and rot from the inside, infecting neighboring vegetables with mold.
To preserve supplies for a long time, these vegetables must be kept in different containers or at least on different shelves. Potatoes do best in a cool, dark place in paper bags or wooden boxes, while onions do best in nets or baskets with airflow.
Separating these two popular vegetables will help you avoid wasting food and keep it fresh for months longer.
