We spend a third of our lives in bed, but we often forget that mattress requires no less care than bed linen. Over time, dust and skin particles accumulate in the upholstery and unpleasant yellow stains. However, you can return your sleeping area to its original freshness with the help of simple ingredients that can be found in every home.
Surface preparation
Before wet processing begins, surface dirt must be removed. Ideal for this powerful vacuum cleaner with nozzle for upholstered furniture. Carefully go over the entire surface, paying special attention to seams and recesses where the most dust and dust mites. This step is critical so that when wet, the dust does not turn into dirty stains.
DIY universal stain remover
To combat the characteristic yellow spots and general dirt, a peroxide-based mixture works best. This composition acts as a mild bleach and disinfectant.
You will need:
-
200 ml hydrogen peroxide (3%);
-
3 tablespoons baking soda;
-
A few drops of dishwashing liquid.
Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle and apply directly to the stains. Leave the product to act for 10–15 minutes. You will see how the baking soda and peroxide react, pushing the dirt to the surface. After this, blot the wet areas with a clean, dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture and dirt.
Fighting odors
If the mattress has lost its freshness, the dry cleaning method will help. Sprinkle over the entire surface baking soda through a sieve in an even layer. Soda is an excellent natural absorbent that absorbs moisture and neutralizes unpleasant odorsrather than simply masking them. Leave the powder on the mattress for at least a few hours, preferably all day. After this, thoroughly vacuum the surface again.
Removal of specific contaminants
Different types of stains require a different approach:
-
Traces of blood cannot be treated with hot water, as the protein will coagulate and become firmly embedded in the fabric. Use only cold water and salt or hydrogen peroxide, applying them pointwise with a cotton pad.
-
Stains from drinks (coffee or wine) can be easily removed with the solution vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio. Vinegar also helps restore the brightness of fabric if it has become dull.
Regular cleaning of the mattress at least twice a year helps not only to maintain its appearance, but also to prevent the development of allergies. After all procedures, let the product dry completely with the windows open or the fan turned on to prevent mold from growing inside. Using a high-quality protective mattress cover will greatly simplify the care of your sleeping area in the future.
